Edward Hosharian Foundation Scholarship 2017 Recipient

Saro Babikian is a distinguished classical guitarist and music educator based in Los Angeles, known for his exceptional skill and dedication to the art of classical guitar. He began his musical journey at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Classical Guitar Performance, graduating Cum Laude in both.

As the founder and manager of Saro’s Guitar Studio in Glendale, Saro has guided over 40 students of all ages and skill levels, with many of his students winning awards in guitar competitions. His commitment to music education extends to institutions like Holy Family Catholic Grade School and 88 Keys Music Academy, where he has taught both group and individual lessons. Additionally, he has contributed to after-school enrichment programs and served as a tutor for music theory and history at Glendale Community College.

Saro's performance career is equally impressive, featuring solo recitals and chamber music performances at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the 3rd Yerevan International Guitar Festival in Armenia. As a recipient of the 2017 Edward Hosharian Foundation Scholarship, he performed with the Armenian Pops Ensemble and has also been invited to perform Rodrigo’s "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" with the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra. His versatility extends to conducting, having led the USC Thornton Beethoven Ensemble in the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 1st Symphony.

In addition to his live performances, Saro is a regular performer at Mimoda Jazz Studio and the Groupmuse House Concert Series in Los Angeles. He has also composed and arranged various pieces for solo guitar and chamber music, further contributing to the classical guitar repertoire. His numerous honors include the USC Thornton Classical Guitar Ensemble Award and the AGBU Performing Arts Scholarship, affirming his significant contributions to the field. Fluent in Arabic, Armenian, and English, Saro continues to inspire and educate through his dedication to classical guitar, leaving a lasting impact on his students and audiences alike.
